Dean Surface is the Director of Bands at Hendrickson High School in Pflugerville ISD. He began his career in Keller ISD over 20 years ago and moved to Trinity Springs upon its opening in 2006. Under his direction, the Trinity Springs Wind Ensemble has consistently earned Superior ratings at UIL, Peak Festivals, Ovation band contests, and Beach Within Reach festivals, receiving numerous "Outstanding Ensemble" and "Best in Class" awards. The ensemble has also been named a National Winner in the Mark of Excellence competition multiple times and has performed at the Music for All National Festival, on 101.1 WRR, and NBC Channel 5. While he was a member of the Timber Creek HS staff, the band had many successful Marching competitions through BOA and UIL state and finalist performances spanning from San Antonio to St. Louis.
Mr. Surface is a member of the Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, Phi Beta Mu, and Texas Music Adjudicators Association. He has guest conducted across Texas as a district and TMEA region band clinician, serves on the faculty at the Baylor Summer Music Camp, and has presented at the Sam Houston State/Southern Methodist University Summer Symposium, TMEA, TBA, and The Midwest Clinic. He has also served as the TMEA Region Middle School Band Coordinator Elect and Region Band Technology Coordinator. On campus, he is part of the leadership team and frequently adjudicates UIL and festival competitions.
Mr. Surface holds a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Baylor University and a Master’s degree in Educational Administration from Texas Woman’s University.
His wife, Courtney, is a Lecturer in Music Education at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. They have two daughters, Kennedy and Mckinley. Kennedy is a Music Education major at Baylor, with Horn as her primary instrument. Mckinley is a senior at Keller High School and a highly accomplished oboist. She plans to pursue a degree in Music Education after graduating in 2026.
Mr. Surface enjoys teaching band at all levels, recognizing it as a journey that begins in middle school and continues through high school and beyond.
